Daily classwork & homework will be posted here each day.  Be sure to check when you are ABSENT, and return with this work DONE; Do NOT ask me what the “homework was when you were gone”...this is how I communicate with absent students.

Week of December 8-12, 2014

Day A:  BLOCKING

  1. 1. “Questions in a Jar”  (Reminder: Exam Review can be found HERE - scroll to bottom & look for red “Exam Study Guide” link)

  2. 2.Announcements:  last improv show = Thursday, December 18 @ 7 p.m.

  3. 3.Reminder:  Theatre Hours AND Scene Performance due Friday, Dec 12!

  4. 4.Went over today’s learning goal for Day 4 (written in scene booklet - page 15).

  5. 5.Students were given time to work on the learning goal for the day with their partner in order to determine and correctly write the scene’s blocking in their scripts, as well as rehearse their scenes several times (40 minutes)

  6. 6.Students completed an exit question for their scene rehearsal time (on label in scene booklet - page 14).

  7. 7.Reviewed improv rules & played one quick improv game.

Homework:  Rehearse / Be ready to perform with your partner by Friday!


Day B:  REHEARSAL

  4. 4.Students wrote their own learning goal for Day 5 (wrote in scene booklet - page 17).  Ms. Price instructed that learning goals should include a verb (something you have to DO), should be measurable, and should be specific.

  5. 5.Students were given time to work on the learning goal for the day with their partner.

  6. 6.Students completed bottom of page 17 and an exit question for their rehearsal time (on label in scene booklet - page 18).

  7. 7.Reviewed improv rules.

  8. 8.Played improv game (freeze).  Students earned a ticket for participation.

  9. 9.Completed improv (day 5) exit questions in booklet.

Day C:  REHEARSAL

Week of December 1-5, 2014

Day A:  BLOCKING A SCENE / IMPROV

  1. 1. Finished previous lessons - 1st hour: Les Mis / 5th hour:  Rivers & Ravines

  2. 2. Ms. Price gave actors/crew in Rumors their writing assignment (which replaces the “Critique Assignment” - due Monday, December 8.

Homework:

Be sure you have your final scene choice made & a copy of your scene TOMORROW!


Day B:  SCENE ANALYSIS / IMPROV

  1. 1. Ms. Price passed out “Final Scene Booklets” and “Questions in a Jar” answer sheets

  2. 2.At the bell, Ms. Price asked 5 questions from the content learned in semester (“Questions in a Jar”) and students wrote answers.  Ms. Price explained that this will be a daily habit at bell from now until exams.  It serves as an exam review and provides extra credit for the exam (or semester) to those who get 3-5 questions correct.

  3. 3.Announcements:  Improv Shows on Thursday, December 4, and Thursday, December 18 (Christmas theme) @ 7:00 p.m. ($3) in black box. 

  4. 4. Went over today’s learning goal for Day 1 (written in scene booklet - page 8).

  5. 5.Students were given time to work on the learning goal for the day with their partner in order to determine the scene’s climax, beats, set, & blocking pattern. (20 minutes)

  6. 6.Students completed an exit question for their scene analysis time (on label in scene booklet - page 10).

  7. 7.Started Improv (will do improv every day for the 2nd half of class).  But first, students answered 2 pre-improv questions on page 27 of their scene booklet. 

  8. 8.Learned 2 improv rules:  1.) say yes, & 2.) say yes, and... (meaning, in improv you want to agree to the situation given, and then add to it)

  9. 9.Did activities to both illustrate and practice these first two rules:  1.) tug of war, & 2.) “yes and-ing” partner activity

Day C:  CHARACTER ANALYSIS / IMPROV

  1. 1. Questions in a Jar (see #2 in day “B” of this week)

  2. 2.Announcements:  Improv Shows on Thursday, December 4, and Thursday, December 18 (Christmas theme) @ 7:00 p.m. ($3) in black box. 

  3. 4.Went over today’s learning goal for Day 2 (written in scene booklet - page 11).

  4. 5.Students were given time to work on the learning goal for the day with their partner in order to determine their character’s type of movement for the scene (Laban), Leading Center, Mannerisms, & Stage Business (20 minutes)

  5. 6.Students completed an exit question for their character analysis time (on label in scene booklet - page 12).

  6. 7.Started Improv (will do improv every day for the 2nd half of class).   

  7. 8.Reviewed 1st two improv rules:  1.) say yes, & 2.) say yes, and... (meaning, in improv you want to agree to the situation given, and then add to it)

  8. 9.Learned third improv “rule”:  Give “gifts” (meaning you’re always trying to help your partner out by telling them who & where they are - this helps to make everything crystal clear early on in a scene & actors don’t have to spend time trying to figure out what their partner is thinking)

  9. 10.Practiced the skill of “giving gifts”  (character gifts & environment gifts)

  10. 11. Played out scenes from the one-line gift activity.  Discussed.

Day D:  SUBTEXT / IMPROV

  1. 1. Questions in a Jar (see #2 in day “B” of this week)

  2. 2.Announcements:  Improv Show on December 18 (Christmas theme) @ 7:00 p.m. ($6 - includes coffee/dessert)

  3. 3.Reminder:  Theatre Hours & Scene Performance - both due Friday, December 12.

  4. 4.Went over today’s learning goal for Day 3 (written in scene booklet - page 13).

  5. 5.Students were given time to work on the learning goal for the day with their partner in order to determine their the scene’s subtext by “verbing” 15 character lines (for a review of how to do this, watch HERE from 3:25-9:01)

  6. 6.Students completed an exit question for their subtext time (on label in scene booklet - page 14).

  7. 7.Reviewed third improv “rules” and talked about a 4th “rule” of always making your partner look good (includes making sure you don’t try to “stump” your partner or make them do silly things for your enjoyment; also means you always try to avoid questions when performing improv b/c they put pressure on your partner)

  8. 8.Watched two clips from Whose Line is it Anyway with improv actors playing a game called “Questions”.  Played “Questions” game as a class.  Discussed.

Week of November 23-24, 2014 (Thanksgiving Week)

UNIT:  ....AAAAND SCENE!

Day A:

  1. 1. Announcements:  Your Critique for Rumors. is due November 25.  No critique assignments will be accepted past the due date.  Period.

  2. 2.(Students signed up for scenes/partners for final acting project)

  3. 3.1st hour:  Watched Les Miserables / 5th hour:  did lesson from “Day C” of last week...look below.

Homework:

1.) Choose a scene partner AND a scene to perform for your FINAL scene (due 2 classes from now - not next class, but the next).  Scenes can be any that we’ve workshopped in class OR one from my website...check out other scene options HERE.

Day B:

  1. 1. Students turned in Critique Assignment with rubric stapled to the top.

Week of November 17-21, 2014

UNIT:  ....AAAAND SCENE!

Day A:  STAGE BUSINESS & BLOCKING

  1. 1. Announcements:  Reminder that you’re required to attend the fall play and write a Critique. (If ABSENT, get this from Ms. Price a.s.a.p.!)  The critique will be due November 25.  No critique assignments will be accepted past the due date.  Period.

  2. 2.Finished watching video:  “KP’s Theatre Class - Blocking”.  (If ABSENT, watch this before returning to class and take notes!)

  3. 3.Read scene from Steel Magnolias.  (If ABSENT, print scene from HERE and bring to class!) 

  4. 4.Discussed ways to include “stage business” in Steel Magnolias in order to show the “subtext” of the scene.

  5. 5.Read a scene from 1984.  (If ABSENT, print scene from HERE and bring to class!) 

  6. 6.Discussed how to create “build” in a scene.

  7. 7.Students were given a chance to block their own scenes (1984, Steel Magnolias, or Proof).  Goal:  Block scene in a way that shows build.

Day B:  BLOCKING FROM BEATS

Note:  5th hour did “Help the Play” day in the theatre today

  1. 1. Announcements:  Reminder that you’re required to attend the fall play and write a Critique. (If ABSENT, get this from Ms. Price a.s.a.p.!)  The critique will be due November 25.  No critique assignments will be accepted past the due date.  Period.

  2. 2.Read a scene from Fools (If ABSENT, print scene from HERE and bring to class!)

  3. 3.Did an activity in which Ms. Price coached students on how to create blocking patterns (and build) by finding and staging beats of a scene.

  4. 4.Students practiced this concept on their own scene choice (1984, Fools, Proof, Steel Magnolias, or Rumors)

Week of November 10-14, 2014

UNIT:  ....AAAAND SCENE!

Day A:  LISTENING & REACTING

  1. 4.Did a koosh ball activity that taught students about subtext in a scene (i.e. the meaning BENEATH the lines / what’s really going on between characters in a scene)

  2. 5.Discussed the importance of listening & reacting in a scene (for every action there should be a reaction) and how the koosh ball activity illustrated that.

  3. 6.Watched a video:  “KP’s Theatre Class - Wants” (if ABSENT, watch this video in its entirety to be sure you’ve learned & understood the concept of finding wants in a scene and expressing the want as a verb)

  4. 7.Ms. Price passed out a scene:  To Gillian on her 37th Birthday.  Read & discussed scene.  (If ABSENT, print scene from HERE and bring to class!)

  5. 8.Ms. Price guided students through the process of determining and marking “wants” in a script (guided practice)

  6. 9.Students worked with a partner to find 10 additional “wants” in the scene, To Gillian on her 37th Birthday.  (independent practice)

  7. 10.Students turned in scenes before they left class.

Day B:  WANTS, OBSTACLES, TACTICS

  1. 1. Reviewed wants (expressed as verbs) in a scene

  2. 2. Discussed verbs that are “weak” in a scene

  3. 3. Ms. Price passed back the To Gillian on her 37th Birthday scenes, and students reviewed eachothers’ chosen wants/verbs.  Partners made suggestions for corrections.

  4. 4.Students worked with scene partners to block their scenes using verbs to help making movement choices. 

  5. 5.Ms. Price introduced the idea of obstacles in a scene (what prevents a character from getting what he/she wants) and tactics (what a character will do to get what he/she wants).  Discussed in the context of the scene.

Day C:  BEATS & OPENING BEATS

  1. 1. Announcement: Improv Show tonight @ 7 p.m. ($3)

  2. 2.Reviewed:  wants (what a character wants to do to the character they’re speaking with - with their words), obstacles (what prevents a character from getting what they want), tactics (what a character will do to get what he/she wants)

  3. 3.Discussed:  Options for tactics...1.) try the same tactic, 2) try the same tactic, but “up the anty” (i.e. ask...plead...beg), 3.) try a different tactic, 4.) give up

  4. 4.Learned about beats (definition:  a unit/chunk of action in a scene with a specific intention/purpose)

  5. 5.Marked beats in the scene To Gillian on her 37th Birthday (if ABSENT, see Ms. Price individually to learn this concept)

  6. 6.Read a new scene from the play, Proof.  (For a trailer of what this play is about, click HERE.)  If ABSENT, go HERE to print the scene and bring to next class!

  7. 7.Learned about opening beats (the “beat” that happens before the scene begins - which gives “clues” to the audience about what the scene is about & who the characters are)

  8. 8.Staged the opening beat of the scene from Proof.

  9. 9.Discussed how stage business can give more subtext in the scene.  Tried using stage business to show the subtext in the opening beat of the scene from Proof.

Week of October 20-24, 2014

Day A:  INTRO TO SCRIPT READING

  1. 1. (Ms. Price passed back tests for those who haven’t yet passed)

  2. 2.Students completed a self evaluation/reflection

  3. 3.Discussed how plays aren’t meant to be read, they’re meeant to be SEEN and discussed various things that can make READING a play more/less interesting or engaging.

  4. 4.Ms. Price introduced students to the modern day playwright, Neil Simon.  For background information on this playwright (if ABSENT), click HERE (read first 4 paragraphs).

  5. 5.Ms. Price led students in a discussion of the “world of the play”, Lost in Yonkers, by discussing what was going on in 1942 (the year the play was set).

  6. 6.The class read together the beginning of the play, Lost in Yonkers (exposition & conflict).

Homework:

Read “How to Read a Play”  (also can be found under “Unit 2” on Theatre “Course Content” page)


Day B:  PLOT

  1. 1. Reviewed homework (“How to Read a Play”) by completing a crossword puzzle (in pairs).  First to finish earned extra credit toward their QUIZ TOMORROW.  (Quiz will be on homework reading from yesterday.)  Students were told to keep crossword as “notes” to study.  (If ABSENT, you can get crossword HERE.)

  2. 2.Watched a video:  “KP’s Theatre Class - Plot”  (if ABSENT, be sure to watch and take NOTES before returning to class!

  3. 3.Reviewed how we learn about characters in the exposition of a play.  [By what the 1.) playwright says about a character, by what 2.) other characters say, by what 3.) a character says about him/herself.]

  4. 4.Continued reading the play, Lost in Yonkers (conflict & build)

Read “How to Read a Play” if you haven’t already.  Learn terms.  Quiz next class (no notes).


Day C:  PLOT

  1. 1. Announcements: 1.) you must attend the fall play, Rumors (required - must also write a critique).  Show dates are November 20-22 @ 7 p.m.  (if you have a problem with dates/money  you must let me know at least a week before opening night, and she’ll give you an alternate assignment).  2.)  There will be a halloween-themed improv show on Thursday, October 30th @ 7 p.m. - not required, but definitely a fun way to get theatre hours.  :)

Day D:  PLOT

  1. 1. Announcements: 1.) you must attend the fall play, Rumors (required - must also write a critique).  Show dates are November 20-22 @ 7 p.m.  (if you have a problem with dates/money  you must let me know at least a week before opening night, and she’ll give you an alternate assignment).  2.)  There will be a halloween-themed improv show on Thursday, October 30th @ 7 p.m. - not required, but definitely a fun way to get theatre hours.  :)  3.)   4. 4.Discussed the differences between scripts & movies.  Watched the movie version of the script, Lost in Yonkers (first 26 minutes).  Students were asked to notice HOW actors portrayed their characters - what did they DO that wasn’t in the script that made it more believable, etc.?

Week of October 13-17, 2014

Day A:  PERFORMANCE / INTRO TO SCRIPT

  1. 6.Students (only those who did not pass Unit 1 test) did test re-takes,

  2. 7.Finished performing Goodbye scenes (complete reflection & turn in if you performed)

  3. 8.(1st hour):  Watched a short film up to “climax” and individually wrote alternate endings to the story in Process Journal.  (if ABSENT, I will show the video next class and give you the opportunity to write ending - your label is in your journal)

Homework: None  :)  (unless you think you didn’t pass re-take #2)


Day B:  STORY VS. SCRIPT

  1. 1. Watched a short film up to “climax” and individually wrote alternate endings to the story in Process Journal

  2. 2.Determined what it takes to write a SCRIPT (What do you include/not include?  How much action is determined by a playwright?  Etc.

  3. 3.Students wrote a script in their Process Journals that was the climax/end of the short film, The Lost & Found Shop.  (if ABSENT, you do not need to make up this assignment in your journal.)

  4. 4.Ms. Price showed the end of the film, The Lost & Found Shop & discussed.

  5. 5.Finished scripts were re-distributed among students and students had a chance to rehearse eachothers’ scripts (without speaking to the playwright). 

Homework:  None, unless you didn’t pass test.  (If you still haven’t passed, you MUST STUDY.  See previous homework for specifics on videos/notes.)


Day C:  STORY VS. SCRIPT

  1. 1.(Students who have not yet passed the Unit 1 test took re-do #3)

  2. 2.(5th hour):  Ms. Price showed the end of the film, The Lost & Found Shop & discussed.

  3. 3.Ms. Price re-distributed students’ scripts (from yesterday) to student actors, and each was performed for the playwrights.  Discussed what actors are allowed to interpret/change in a script.  Discussed how the playwright’s intent was/wasn’t shown in performed scripts.

Day D:  STORY VS. SCRIPT

  1. 1.(Students who have not yet passed the Unit 1 test took re-do #3 - we did not get to this yesterday, so it was moved to today.

  2. 2.Finished “Lost & Found” scenes

  3. 3.Discussed scripts from an actor’s, playwright’s, and audience’s perspective.

  4. 4.Discussed how scripts aren’t meant to be read, they’re meant to be seen.

  5. 5.Ms. Price introduced that starting next week, we will be reading a play togehter as a class.  (We did not start the play.)

Week of October 6-10, 2014

Day A: INTRO TO STORY UNIT

  1. 6.(5th hour) Students took Unit 1 test & finished performing “Open Ended Scenes”.

  2. 7.(1st hour):  Final 2 groups performed “Open Ended Scene” & absent students did test make-up.

  3. 8.Wrote in Process Journals:  “What makes a story worth telling?  What moves a story forward?” (if ABSENT, this is your responsibility)

  4. 9.Did a storytelling activity as a class

  5. 10.Watched a video by Ira Glass (radio storyteller) on the art of storytelling.  If ABSENT, watch HERE from 0:00-3:04 - you are responsible for knowing this information!).  Reviewed anecdote & bait from video & how it relates to creating stories in theatre.

  6. 11.Started a new acting scene:  Goodbye scene.  (Ms. Price played 3 different clips of music to which students worked from “feels like” to “looks like” in their Process Journals and then used those ideas to begin to create a scene with a partner using one of the clips of music.  If ABSENT, you will get a review of each clip next class & must catch up!)

Unit 1: Theatre:  Art in Motion

Day A:

  4. 6.Opening activity with partner:  Negative space

  5. 7.Ms. Price introduced concept of negative space by showing the clever use of negative space in various advertising logos.

  6. 8.Discussed the use of negative space in art/theatre.

  7. 9.Ms. Price showed a short documentary, “It Ain’t Over” (created by filmmaker Caleb Slain).  Discussed use of negative space in the film (sound, images, characters, etc.)

Day B:

  2. 2.Reviewed “negative space” (5th hour did an opening activity with a partner involving negative space)

  3. 3.Opening Activity (in groups):  Composition tableaus

  4. 4.Discussed various aspects of “art” in theatre by looking at one musical, The Lion King.  (watched a few short videos).

  5. 5.Discussed how ALL artistic elements on stage (costumes, set, lighting, make-up, etc.) use COLOR, and how it is the director’s job to create MEANING using the artistic elements on stage (and COLOR).

  6. 6.Discussed the cultural and subconscious “language” of color.  For example, in our culture, black often signifies death or evil.  Red can signify love or anger/murder.  White signifies purity.  Etc.

  7. 7.Students were asked to pair up and pick a color to “work with” in the next acting actifity. 

  8. 8.Ms. Price passed out an “Open-Ended Scene”, which gives very general lines that allow students to create their own scenes in an open-ended way.  (i.e. the scene can take on MANY forms.)  Ms. Price asked the students to use their chosen color as the guide for the MOOD of their scene and create a setting/characters that match that mood.  (Time today was given only to discuss with partner.)

Day C:

  1. 1. Reviewed yesterday’s activity (open-ended scene in the mood of the color chosen)

  2. 2.Ms. Price challenged students about their ideas (being specific) & artistic intentions (how to show the intention), etc.

  3. 3.Ms. Price discussed what rehearsal “looks like” and laid ground rules for rehearsal time in class.

  4. 4.Ms. Price discussed with students how they will be graded on these, and other scenes, in class and shared rubric (Criterion C:  “Thinking Creatively”) & reflection sheets with students.  (If ABSENT, see Ms. Price for an explanation and these forms.)

  6. 6.Did a “right brain” activity with drawing non-literal things & looked at various artists’ works & stage pictures to discover meaning found in the composition of a piece.
